Selection Tips for Employers

How to find out whether the candidate speaks honestly at an interview

  1. Attentively observe the candidate’s non-verbal language. There might be concerns if the person:
    - Doesn’t keep eye contact;
    - Often touches the tip of his nose,
      covers his mouth while speaking;
    - Wiggles on a chair, scratches oneself.

  2. Ask the same question in different ways and watch whether answers differ or remain the same.

  3. Ask specifying questions. If the candidate has not performed the mentioned functions or achieved the mentioned results in practice, he would not be able to quickly collect his thoughts and name precise figures, percents, dates and so on.

  4. Observe the clarity of candidate’s response. The candidates that have no exact answer for a question often avoid replying and tend to switch over to another subject.

  5. Ask projective questions. Assuming that the question does not concern him in person the candidate would in most cases answer based on his own experience and character. For example, one can ask the following questions:
    - In what circumstances can lie be justified?
    - Why do you think people bring themselves to stealing/lying/bribing?
    - How do you identify people lying?

  6. Spend more time on an interview. As a rule, a person cannot keep his speech under control for more than 45 minutes; after this period, he stops controlling each word and it is time to ask the most tricky questions, or to repeat them.

  7. Ask for recommendations.
